Detection Technology has launched AVA Zero, a dual-energy X-ray line detector aimed at entry-level urban security screening systems, in a move the company says is intended to help scanner manufacturers reduce overall system costs while maintaining image quality.

In a press release dated 20 October 2026, the Finland-based company said AVA Zero is targeted at transmissive X-ray security scanners used in settings such as metro and train stations and “critical structures”, where procurement often prioritises price, reliability and ease of integration.

The company said the new detector uses a compact dual-energy design that integrates low- and high-energy detection on a single printed circuit board, which it claims improves registration accuracy between signals and reduces the installation footprint. Detection Technology also said the design reduces material use by 20% compared with its previous approach.

AVA Zero is part of the company’s AVA detector family and uses the same readout and a single software development kit, which the company said is intended to support faster integration across multiple system configurations and reduce engineering effort for manufacturers building high-volume systems.

“AVA Zero’s concise design enables more accurate low- and high-energy registration, better cost efficiency and a reduced material footprint,” said Tomi Fält, Director of Product Management at Detection Technology, in the release.

The launch comes as public transport operators and facility managers face increasing pressure to expand screening coverage in dense urban environments, where the business case often depends on lowering the total cost of ownership without degrading detection performance. For manufacturers, modular detector designs and common software toolchains can also reduce time-to-market for new scanner variants.

Detection Technology said AVA Zero is available in volume quantities.
