Synology has released ActiveProtect Manager 2.0 (APM 2.0), a software update for its ActiveProtect data protection appliances, adding broader platform support, cross-platform recovery and new security features, with an AI-driven security capability planned for a subsequent update.
Synology said APM 2.0 expands protection coverage to Amazon EC2, Azure VM, Proxmox VE, Nutanix AHV and Google Workspace. The company said cross-platform recovery will allow workloads to be backed up and restored across different environments, positioning the feature for both disaster recovery and workload migration.
Backup destination options have also been extended, according to Synology. ActiveProtect Vault now supports a wider range of Synology NAS models, and Azure Blob Storage has been added as a supported copy and tiering target. Synology said backups stored in Amazon S3 Storage or Azure Blob Storage can be restored directly into Amazon EC2 or Azure VM without routing through on-premises hardware, which it said reduces recovery times.
On the security side, APM 2.0 introduces software-based storage encryption at the volume level for data at rest. Synology said this is intended to keep backup data and system configurations inaccessible in the event of drive theft or hardware loss.
Synology also outlined plans for an upcoming APM 2.1 release, which it said will add AI/ML-based anomaly detection to monitor backup versions for changes including shifts in change rate, file modifications, mass deletions and entropy. Under the planned feature, suspicious backup copies would be quarantined for administrator review, and Synology said the model would learn from investigation outcomes to reduce false positives.
APM 2.1 is also expected to add malware scanning prior to restoration using third-party antivirus tools including Microsoft Defender, Bitdefender and ESET. Synology said that if malware is detected in the most recent backup, an “Auto Fallback” function would restore the latest clean version instead.
Synology said ActiveProtect Manager 2.0 is available for all DP-Series appliances at no additional cost.
