Milestone announces XProtect and BriefCam upgrades, including a containerised app platform

Milestone Systems has announced updates to its XProtect video management software (VMS) and BriefCam video analytics, including a new containerised application platform aimed at reducing disruption from software deployments and supporting expanded use of AI-driven video analytics.

The company said the updates are intended to address operational challenges created by growing volumes of video data, where the issue is no longer only capturing footage but extracting usable information for security and operational decision-making.

Milestone’s new XProtect App Platform is described as a Linux-based, containerised component that runs alongside existing XProtect installations. Milestone said isolating applications and services in separate containers allows customers to install applications and updates without a full system restart and without disrupting live operations.

The platform is positioned as a way to introduce newer VMS applications — including AI, analytics and access control — while avoiding replacement of existing deployments, according to the company.

Milestone also announced a redesigned BriefCam analytics engine, which it said improves real-time processing, scalability and workflow efficiency. The company said users should see a 38% improvement in real-time throughput, and that processing can run on-premise without cloud dependencies.

Milestone said the new BriefCam engine supports plain-language searches based on witness statements, tools to identify key moments to reduce review time, and custom categorisations to better match organisational requirements.

Andrew Burnett, chief technology officer at Milestone Systems, said the company sees growing demand for platforms that can keep pace with AI in video security, and framed the announcements as part of its broader “open platform” strategy.

In addition, Milestone announced plans for ecosystem updates including an App Center for browsing and installing applications, and a Developer Portal intended to consolidate tools for building and releasing applications for the platform. The company said the Developer Portal is expected to be generally available by the end of 2026.

Milestone said the XProtect App Platform and the new BriefCam engine are available now for early access customers, with general availability planned for late 2026.
