Verra Mobility has commenced an independent trial for its trailer-based road safety cameras in Melbourne. While commonly associated with speed monitoring, Verra Mobility’s trailers bring a range of detection capabilities including red light violations, bus lane enforcement, license plate recognition, and driver safety monitoring.
Verra Mobility has deployed two relocatable trailers along Canterbury Road, Melbourne as part of a four-week non-enforcement technical trial. Positioned at two points across Canterbury Road, the trial will collect data which will be shared with the Victorian Government to help shape future public safety and mobility programs.
The two trailer-based devices will also be trialling Average Speed Enforcement – in which vehicle speed will be tracked between both devices – in addition to the more traditional point speed enforcement.
“These systems are ultimately built to reduce risk, improve road safety, and make people more vigilant – especially in high-risk locations like school areas and work zones,” said Steven Crutchfield, Senior Vice President and Managing Director, Verra Mobility. “Any roadside deployment involving personnel exposes the operator to significant risk. Our automated trailer-based systems greatly reduce that risk while helping Governments across Australia ensure the safety of road-users, pedestrians, and workers.”
The Melbourne trial is focused on calibrating and validating the equipment which is an essential step for generating the insights needed for future deployments across Victoria.
“Unlike fixed enforcement cameras, trailer-based and relocatable systems can be deployed virtually anywhere — urban streets, rural highways, or high-risk zones — and moved at short notice. This flexibility creates an important psychological effect; drivers never know where a unit might be positioned,” Crutchfield said.
“Uncertainty changes behaviour. When drivers understand that speed limits could be enforced anywhere at any time, they are far more likely to slow down – not just at camera locations, but across their entire journey.”
With more than 9,000 systems deployed worldwide and hundreds of thousands of operational hours logged, Verra Mobility’s enforcement solutions are helping governments achieve their safety goals by targeting dangerous driving anywhere, anytime.
